toxic temple: MESS

Donaufestival Krems 2023

Performative Installation at Donaufestival, Forum Frohner
in collaboration with Kilian Jörg

Exhausted soils, acidified seas, polluted atmospheres. The repressed is coming for us. We can no longer escape the poison. LET’S GET SICK WITH IT!
A space where we bring our inner contradictions, absurdities, and lived risks to the altar. A solidarity with the facts. We enter „Wastelands“ rather than new territories, and make room for the artifacts. Colorful assemblages of things that connect the known cosmos, wobbly grounds of new divinity, and sharp smells that propel us into the sublime. Landfills are the new temples. In sadistic fashion, we breathe in the here and now. Transformative forces are unleashed. Free radicals. Rituals to expose the chaos beneath the smooth surface.

What changes if we worship the power of the toxic religiously? Can a cosmic connection be achieved in our time of catastrophe through a cult of pollution?
In a processual exhibition, Anna Lerchbaumer and Kilian Jörg approach the beauty of oil slicks, the sublimity of techno-trash, the illumination of radioactivity, and the transcendence of extinction. Perhaps our new gods will be stinking zombies. LET’S MEET AT THE END OF THE WORLD and let’s dance in the intoxicated haze of poisoning!
